breathe

I want to take you into me
necessary as air, and as sweet
so close our breathing matches
my inhalation/your exhalation
blended breath

for you

Dreaming
I will wake walking with you
& waking

I will carry your name
a secret
kept under my tongue

that begs
to be shouted

For Zoe

if sometimes
you are loud, my daughter
it is because

those three continents
you spring from
shout together in one voice,
uniquely yours,
braided into one note,

a history, sometimes bitter
but purified, distilled
& blended into your beauty,

& by others like you
who shape their own names

who rise out of their parents
singing
of new colors, new forms
new thinking

& who will one day
know what it is

to fly
***not sure this is done yet–might be a fragment of something larger, or not

Great Horned Owl

Hunger hunts tonight
winged silhouette under stars
silent midnight glide

busting up cliches

if it takes 2 to tango
what happens when 1
detaches

drifts from dancer
to audience

watches
her partner

ply
those set patterns

of basic outside partner
forward 1-2-3 then slide

leading himself

that tango
no longer suggestive

but set
& singular

haiku: process

formed before I write
the poem in all things finds me
breathless and waiting

our chemistry

this mad science
passion, heated
& distilled
captured by drips
into a flask

left to age
& softened
by dust

settling
on the surface

darkened
by time
its contents

when opened
should sublimate

to something pure
& uncatchable

love (?)
