we cannot be still.

there is no stop to this always.

bitter water

they say life begins with the first drawn breath.
He must not pour olive oil on it or put incense on it, his offering,
because it is a grain offering for jealousy,
his offering is seed
a reminder-offering to draw attention to wrongdoing.
he gives up jealousy
After the priest has had the woman stand before the Lord, she pays with her body
he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder-offering,
life is the price
the grain offering for jealousy,
while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse.

they say life begins, counted two weeks before the last menses.
tansy mixed in water eliminates jealousy
but her sin is carried.

they say life begins the moment of conception.
bitter water. it is the way of women to taste it,
to carry shame if not deliver innocence.

we are always bearing and birthing something.

***italicized text is quoted from Numbers 5: 15, 18 -19(New International Version).  It stinks to be a pro-choice christian.  The prompt today for octpowrimo is taking sides.  I think I managed to stay firmly balanced on the fence for this one.  Thanks for reading this highly experimental piece.

new moon

we know this,
this shadow sucking light
until edges dissolve–
hard white candy
sickled to nothing

we learn in cycles
how night is a mouth
always open
forever swallowing

how is this new

batman vs. catwoman (for Jeff)

opposites always
we squared off in the side yard
called the game
batman vs catwoman
not so much a match
as an excuse to fight
and call it playing

until the afternoon
your role siphoned
what was left of common sense
and you broke my glasses
over your knee
and threw them into the peony bed

batman
was a gentleman
and would not have yelled
so loudly, even before
that belt found his ass

if you pay attention to small things

if you pay attention
to small things
you don’t
have to prove anything
with a grand gesture

like stopping airplanes
or even traffic

just answer my words
written in sand

before waves claim them

that’s what i want.
the small impossible things,
like how you hold this heart gently

and don’t even know
it’s in your hands

insecta

what happens quietly
in front of us
cockroaches led by wasps
silent crickets
mayflies born without mouths

how do we sleep
in the middle of
mindless need?
