white noise

jazz beats
with razor edge
icicle-tooth sound
should not be
white noise
erasing cartoon
& movie soundtracks
played too loud
in the background
while I write

because that jazz
threads its way
easy and teasing
into my words

& I lose
what I should have said
hummed away
when words don’t fit
the beats I snap
with my pulse

or keep time with
fingers playing
this keyboard of letters
instead of piano keys

the muse
is happy either way
it’s all music
whether typed or played

she just wants me
to keep on
with this humming

tile flower

oil pastels and charcoal

her doodled marker and crayon people
hopscotch on empty notebook pages

what will she do
with these grownup tools
I bring her?

rain sambas

Rain sambas drip cloud rhythms

I dance in brass drops

drought breaking

thunder
is the sound
of sky tearing
to let down water

dust tamed to mud
the earth drinks

If you laugh from deep

If your laughter rises from a belly
overflowing with sweetness,
all your mouth covered in teeth,

do you sigh with a heart covered in love,
or laugh that smile in your chest
or does that joy embody

a scale we must hum,
struck tuning forks
lost in pure pitch of feeling

or should I say simply
there is a heart in my mouth
that must speak

& please listen
with your head
covered in ears

***Many thanks to duet partner and friend Noel Ihebuzor for both using the two Igbo sayings in conversation that triggered this poem (head covered in ears and mouth covered with teeth), and also for tweaking the poem with me!  Reading this, all my mouth is covered in teeth!

issues (for Ann)

the polite word
some friends say
someone has,
almost like fleas

instead of he’s nuts
or they make medication
for that

whatever the reason
for that particular that

I prefer to balance
on this spiderwebbed
filament of creativity

teetering the line
between genius
& insanity

celebrate the one
& hope not to drop drown

into the other
