a series of small things

one ant is like small trouble
brushed off & walked away from
but do it quickly

because trouble can swarm
into rivers, with toothed currents
hungry, and swallowing flesh alive
in a series of small bites

more on the drought

If the rain comes
and does not dry
in the thirsty air
before it meets earth
like fingers teasing
a near caress
I will meet it
worshiping the bringer
my skin drinking
what touches me

I dream of water
flattening my hair
to question marks on my neck

yearn for it like a lover
my stone staircase
again a waterfall
and the fruit
drying on the vine
past reviving
pressed to earth

a rainy day
is not bad weather

water
is
everything

Inspiring Blogger Award

Hi all!  Cherry Coley from spilledcookies nominated me for the Inspiring Blogger Award!  Thanks for the nomination, Cherry 🙂 Please stop by and see what awesome stuff she has been up to…

Seven things about me:
1.   I am addicted to junk fiction I call “brain candy.”

2.   Right now, I have 8 kittens in my home (for another 2 weeks) and they are unplugging phone chargers and (worst yet) my modem and cable box.  God made them adorable and sweet so we wouldn’t kill them.

3.   I live right next to a creek, and do a lot of my writing sitting on the bank of it, when I am not daydreaming there.

4.    I recently bought oil pastels for both my daughter and I to create with (she is much, much better than I am).

5.    I love to cook healthy but yummy meals for my family–sometimes they are more one than the other, but I do try.

6.     I think the reason I love gardening is because I like to play in the dirt–not enough mud pie making when I was little, perhaps?

7.    I love other languages–I once set a goal for myself, of learning the worst insult/cuss to say in every new language I encountered–glad I outgrew that phase!

Now, I have to pick 15 blogs that inspire me to nominate for this award.  Honestly, I could probably give you 100!

So, this is how it works–if I have nominated you,  thank me in your acceptance blog, and write 7 things about yourself.  Then, choose 15 more winners and post their URLs in your blog and pass the love on!

let it guide you

this beacon
light of me
flickering

if your eyes read
this ciphered flash

& know
my patterns

let it bring you
past everything
here

what was never said (for RND)

the closest we came
to saying anything
was the day I shopped
on the street
for necklaces

you saw me
& pulled over
to ask if I wanted coffee

all you wanted was water
because you never drank
anything hot, just water
& to talk about music,
books, work

as usual

like we did every day
over lunch,
but how odd
to see the girl from Eden
walking in your neighborhood

we talked a little
about the man-woman thing
about how sometimes
we pretend to ignore it
and you said
it’s always there
& I caught my breath
on that skipped beat

until you danced to another subject

telling, how I never asked
why you stopped the car
& you never said

we just smiled
& moved past it

rooms

so much we don’t know

squared inside rooms
we almost live in

bland walls comforting with sameness
the eye has memorized

only daylight changes
shifts to fluorescent bulbs
driving shadows to corners
where they hide like dust
swept into cracks

ghosts waiting for the chance to stretch

one of these walls
should have a window
or a door

open it

thirst

circled by night breezes
stirring thick heated chants
of katydids and crickets
telling and retelling cycles in grasshopper rasps
of summer already shortening

but my skin does not believe in winter yet
when heat lightning is a tease
that does not bring rain
only longing for it
with each flicker
across clear skies
rivaling starlight for a moment

my bones are twigs snapping
my hair braided grass
everything I am

stretching deep for water
