Too funny! As the product of a Canadian Mom and American Dad–all I can say is I shall be following this closely 😉

Anonymous Good Person's avatarSweet Mother

So, Canadica launches tomorrow and at the risk of sounding redundant, you should follow it.  I’m not going to go into a great big monologue about how it will discuss all things America and all things Canada and I will not go on and on about how it will be funny and I will not talk about how the thing has metamorphosized already into a new nation state, all it’s own, called Canadica, where people speak French and other people call it, “That Language.”  I will not talk about how these are the same people who call things, “Freedom Fries,” which means they are rednecks and so no one pays them much attention at all, until they become George Bush and run that other country.  Hold on!  Was all of that said in only two sentences?  Jesus Christ.  Well, people tend to run their words together in Canadica.  They…

bought not born

they had to drop
out of air already walking
& shaping talking points
the men writing laws
or maybe
only straight white married women
like the ones they own
are worth protecting

no–I think these men with keys
to wind them were spun
out of ideas, pure thought
and pure intention only
nothing as base as flesh

because flesh bleeds
flesh breaks, flesh lactates
& flesh loves
with mammal intensity

& these men
are incapable of anything

that basic

standing

we stand on bones
we stand on ideas
we stand on the bones of ideas
grown & gone to seed
buried (planted)
watered with blood
& harvested

such bitter fruit
staining
our hands

letters in a notebook (for Laurie)

so many flourishes in that signature
the heart dotting the i in her name
an internalized affectation
left over from high school
that fit a name made mostly of vowels
those round sounds so perfectly pearled together
& softer than my hissing consonants

I saved them, those letters she wrote
in the back of her notebook;
love letters promising everything,
but written in her voice

I never knew until after she died
she was so hungry for it once
she manufactured love on paper
to fill the hollowed-out center
of her chest

you can’t see that seeking shadowing the corners
of her photographs & I don’t hear it in memory,
but it was there.  it must have been;

longing that powerful should have darkened
the colors of her voice, as it curled,
sweet & thick around her tongue

but it didn’t

no wonder, when she did finally find
that man, she followed the feeling
with a focus that left him reeling in it

& impossibly empty after she left

he told me once, years later
her love still resonated in a vault
deep behind the solar plexus.  an emptiness
he did not know was there
until she filled it

I do not know, and never will
if the force of that feeling
made him write letters too

September Heights: Autumn (3 haiku)

we say summer fades
after Labor Day, but
we still have 18 days

late summer sparks leaves
to shift yellow to orange
branches catching fire

autumn steps lightly
the brown leaves hiding my path
just a hint of fall

swallowing

having the same name
was nothing he cared about
and the absence of rings
I promised
held us tighter together
in choice
rather than any ritual binding

I did not want everything
I was, all I made
swallowed in one piece
into another name

laughing
at my radicalism,
the leap I would not make,
he agreed to the terms
of my nonsurrender
of this small thing
of self

he understood personally
& more clearly
my point

the day one of my daughter’s friends
called him Mr. Daniels
instead of Mr. Will
