we all do this:
start small & build up
it could be Jenga
or Babel we stack,
weak & teetering
or maybe
we just get taller
but we are always
climbing, building
extending touch
just past the stretch
of fingertips
to something
bigger
than us
sure, we have landed
on the moon
but sky
is still nothing
to thumb your nose at
& needs reaching
from the dirt up
…*zooms in on roller skates*… ha haaa, thumbing the nose eh? I see what happened there, I saw it … wheee *zooms of stage* … *sounds of breaking things!*
Yep–told you! 😉 Hope the sound of breaking things did not include panda bones.
The edification of reaching for something higher than ourselves — or who we are now. I can read this on different levels.
🙂 Oh–I love that word–edification. Thanks so much for the comment!
You last lines are always so striking … you are a real wizard !!!
Oh, thanks so much!
Just read this bit in Ovid and the word “hubris” comes to my mind, and the old Greek giants “built a path to the stars on high, by piling mountain on mountain.” It did not end well for the giants, at least according to Ovid…
…and I assure you I am a pseudo-intellectual at best. Just started reading Ovid because poets are supposed to know about such things, right?
Hahaha! Yes, we are–so we can then make references that make people scratch their heads 😉
Oh! Good point. We still have not learned humility, all these years later!
I like the Babel connection. Hubris at its best? 🙂
Yes, that’s it exactly.
Reblogged this on The Sand County and commented:
I find that this is speaking to something I am shadow boxing with right now.
We do reach, we just need to remember where our feet are.
YES!!!! …um, an I steal that some time?
