may is the month
for remembering

my sister’s birth
my mother’s death

separated by years,
only 4 days apart
on the calendar

the flowers I place
carefully
over their graves
spice the air
like cinnamon
coloring the palate

remembered love
& newness
so closely woven together
with lilacs budding
& spring planting

I do this every year

if I look up
from where I kneel
I will see the house
where I grew into
the woman I am;
while my children run
along the cemetery road
where few cars pass

my mother sold it
years ago,
not wanting to see
where she would someday
be buried, reminded
every morning
drinking her coffee

so a stranger
owns that house now,
though it will
always be mine,
always ours,
the way we own forever
the places that shape us

I brush dirt
from my knees
& stand up,
done with the task
of remembering

open my arms
in a stretch
& move on,

intent
on this business of living

About Susan L Daniels

I am a firm believer that politics are personal, that faith is expressed through action, and that life is something that must be loved and lived authentically--or why bother with any of it?

I have a soft spot for emotional poetry and I loved this.

  2. weep not, child! Imagine the shine in their eyes as the music of this poetry is carried skywards to their welcoming ears!

    • No tears here–just remembering loved ones with a smile, and those shared days across the street from where I planted geraniums this morning 🙂

      • I am reassured. Even on supposedly dark days, one should always bring out his/her sun!
To remember and smile, to remember with a smile, is to say a lot, it is to let the reach out in the present and caress the past and thank the past for its presents! it is to embrace the future without that past with all the warmth, juice and flow of living! – is there a song emerging in this? Please extract one and do a joint song for the two of us – a song that archs like a bridge of rainbow on which walks dreams, realities and soul and fellowships and sharing.on soft floating, bouncing steps that embrace the open skies like love hurrying to a catalytic grind, yes, a song that becomes a bridge bed that love will saunter on after the soft of satiated mutual sharing and glowing songs.

That “remembered love” shines through. And I love the thoughts expressed in the stanza about strangers owning the house now, especially “the way we own forever / the places that shape us”.

  5. Rhonda says:

Beautiful and touching. I am blessed also, with such a full and happy life that when I remember those that have passed I smile and count myself lucky to have had them and not sad because they are gone.
