Haiku heights: lights

past time for fireflies
i stir the campfire, bright sparks
flashing memories

you cannot grasp light–it will pass through your hands

you cannot grasp light
it will pass through your hands,
warming, illuminating
as it leaves you

impossible to contain
something that is both particle
and wave

you say she eludes you.

i would say, perhaps
you chase a reflection
or prismed light
dancing on the floor

it exists, you can see it
but
by nature
impossible to contain
or catch

the fun is
in the chasing

***written in response to this, which I found simply entrancing…

september heights: islands

toes brushing the stones
that urge Niagara forward
three sisters bathing

a spring poem in autumn

September owns ripe fruit urgency & color
but today I scent spring
in falling leaves, in spite of
the apples & concord grapes
on my table instead of strawberries

today something inside stretches & blooms
in response to sun, rebellious
& adamantly out of season

democracy (what it’s not)

on a small scale
no one steals a vote.  one vote
means nothing in the final analysis
of those signing in
& closing the curtain;
it’s all cumulative

but
if you steal 1,000 votes
sealing mouths closed
with red tape, or even
10,000 or 100,000
that’s fraud
on a grand scale

& ironic
that a party
calling for fair elections
everywhere else
is willing to disenfranchise
people more likely than not
to disagree with their platform
& wrap it snug
in voter fraud legislation

but that’s okay
because they have already stolen
the names of the men
who felt most strongly about
taxation without representation
in the first place

with those bags of tea
hanging in front of their eyes
like phylacteries
obscuring vision

***for RGH, who challenged me to write a poem about disenfranchisement.  Told you, it needs a real blog post, not a poem!

there is purity in emptiness

there is purity
in emptiness

in living mostly
on water

sucking sir
with greed like hunger

there is no art
in starvation

hating the heaviness
of matter

wanting to be lifted into clouds
by one helium balloon

to walk through snow
without leaving footprints

you don’t want thinness
you want invisibility

to not be
with the weight of appetite

separate yourself
from flesh entirely

& finally savor
the beauty of your bones

***blame this creepiness on the haiku heights prompt for today.  I made the mistake of reading some blogs written by anorexics.

September heights: starve

the hunger artist
craves the lightness of mayflies
drifting without mouths
