my mother
spoke dream symbols

& told me water carries pain

i did not see it when i was there,
dreaming
stepping through water with my sister

but something swam with us
just out of reach of my knowing

    This is great! As an aside – I wonder what salsa bands signify? I dreamed I was playing in one this morning….hmmm.

    Hi Susan, this is strong – but I wonder if you could change the last line a little?

    Can you ‘know’ if it’s out of reach of knowing. Maybe ‘sense’, ‘feel’?

      Yes, you can know when something just eludes knowledge–like having a word on the tip of your tongue. However, I am going to take out “I knew” from the line above it.

    this is thought provoking and well constructed, Susan. Interesting to think of water as carrying pain. I sense water as “our emotions” in dream symbology. I would enjoy reading more from you on this/these topics. Dream symbols and precognition.

      Thanks so much, Jane. In my family’s dreams, water always meant something that prevented something from happening–an unstoppable force or separation, and a lot of the times death. Of course, these are dream symbols from my family, and might not necessarily be accurate for anyone else 😉

    Just out of reach of knowing, yet so near. There’s a lot to explore in such spaces. Stepping through water does sound rather benign, more of water as common friend, but what do I know?

      🙂 depends on (1) where the water is and (2) what it’s doing. If it is out of place, etc., it means something different besides just being itself, which is a benign thing. At least in the sense of a precognitive dream, which is of a completely different nature than a regular, unleaded variety.
