what was never said (for RND)

the closest we came
to saying anything
was the day I shopped
on the street
for necklaces

you saw me
& pulled over
to askย if I wanted coffee

all you wanted was water
because you never drank
anything hot, just water
& to talk about music,
books, work

as usual

like we did every day
over lunch,
but how odd
to see the girl from Eden
walking in your neighborhood

we talked a little
about the man-woman thing
about how sometimes
we pretend to ignore it
and you said
it’s always there
& I caught my breath
on that skipped beat

until you danced to another subject

telling, how I never asked
why you stopped the car
& you never said

we just smiled
& moved past it

About Susan L Daniels

I am a firm believer that politics are personal, that faith is expressed through action, and that life is something that must be loved and lived authentically--or why bother with any of it?

beautiful and sad and makes us realize that we shouldn’t let such chances pass us by if we can help it.

  4. the road not walked, we miss……the skipped step that froze actual as potential, surveyed from the present with a blend of regret and resignation …..it was meant to be, it would have been! I ilke this poem, confers on the Nike advert an added urgency!

    • ๐Ÿ™‚ Ah, the missed potential led to an excellent friendship–and carpe diem does not apply here, as we were both already otherwise occupied. Just a nice spiced edge to a friendship.
