poetry swarm

words buzz circles
in my consciousness, so loud
the swarming wakes me
at 3 a.m.
faster than any
alarm clock could

so they can spiral desperately
to breed
& nest formed thought
on paper

I can’t write them
fast enough–
catch them, or
they will fly from my fingertips
& be gone
if they are not
quickly contained

finally,
the image is trapped
on the page

& I can sleep

About Susan L Daniels

I am a firm believer that politics are personal, that faith is expressed through action, and that life is something that must be loved and lived authentically--or why bother with any of it?

I can relate to the situation you describe – that painfully sweet or sweetly painful sensation of imbalance that invades us as new ideas, new thoughts, new lines are born or invade our sleep and we jump out of bed and struggle to capture them on paper before they fly away. sometimes, mine come when I am on my 5.45 AM early morning jogs, and you can imagine the agony I feel at not having a piece of paper to trap these!

    • Noel–that’s it, exactly! And, as you run you tell yourself you will remember, but then it “flies away.” Sometimes, inspiration is so cruel….

and you keep on repeating the line – the fisherman’s net has caught the dancing moon and the stars, little winking fingerlings, have slipped through the net along with the big cat fish….and the fisherman’s net has caught the swaying moon….and the fisherman’s net …and then you get home and realise that the line has slipped through, just like your big cat fish, and you feel bad, feeling that your chi, (your personal god), has been unfair to you but then you console yourself saying – a man should never wrestle with his personal god!

  4. Yes! Noel–you ought to write about wrestling with your personal god–such a powerful image.
