if we had ever

if we had ever
in these seven years
danced together
you would know
the one way

I would let you
lead me
without question

if not
the only place

but
with heels on
I am taller than you
by inches
instead of fractions

looking up
makes you uncomfortable
leading

and so we move
to different rhythms
in separate music

you will never know
how automatic
those backward following steps

women learn as girls
are to me
encoded
in this body

About Susan L Daniels

I am a firm believer that politics are personal, that faith is expressed through action, and that life is something that must be loved and lived authentically--or why bother with any of it?

I can relate from a blokes point of view, well kind of

  2. When the music stops and disentangling and untangling have to commence – discordant inner tunes and feet of lead/clay! You describe it well, Susan..

Well done. Yet funny thing, you also know how to shuffle forward. I could play hoops in ankle straps. How many dudes could do such a thing?
